Urban frontiers
City boundaries exist only as lines on a map. In the physical world, they are almost imperceptible. Although the end of a city is formally marked by name signs, buildings, urban infrastructure, and industrial facilities often continue well beyond them.
Contemporary cities are expanding rapidly. Housing developments spill into surrounding fields, often bordering land that is still under cultivation. New roads and future city streets cut through farmland long before the first residential buildings appear. These outskirts are sites of fascinating struggle — of constant tension and transformation.
Concrete, asphalt, and glass advance into the realm of suburban nature. The outcome of this struggle is always predetermined: urbanization prevails. The outskirts move ever farther from the center, steadily absorbing new territories.
